Distribution both on the Mac App Store and externally

I have a Mac application that I am planning soon.

I want it to be available for purchase on MAS, but I also want to offer a trial version on my site.

I will sign a trial version with my developer ID and a MAS version with my distribution certificate.

If the user downloads a temporary trial version and then decides to purchase it from MAS:

  • Will the MAS allow them to buy, or will it ask the user that they already have the application installed (due to the fact that they use the same package identifier)?

  • The reason I want them to share the same package identifier is because both the temporary trial version and the MAS versions can share their sandbox data and Keychain data. Is it possible?

(I considered using IAP and generally abandoned the time trial, but IAP does not allow the bulk assessment that I would like to use.)

  • MAS will warn the user that they already have the application installed. Your users will first need to uninstall the trial version.
