How to debug "internal server error"?

When you make changes to the .htaccess files and something is wrong, you get an "Internal Server Error". This does not help me. How can I find out what the actual error is?

Error error should be saved in server logs. Where it exactly depends on your server and settings.

Eg. in the apache2 file, the log is defined in ErrorLogin your configuration or in the virtual host.
