Html5 video does not play in android browser but works in (mobile) chrome

I have a website (clients) that uses js bright player to render html5 video. (read: I cannot edit the site itself)

In mobile Chrome, the video works, and everything is in order. However, in my Android application, using a WebView that displays the same page cannot play video.

I read a lot of similar SO questions and made sure the following was done:

  • disable web browsing plugins (to disable Flash) to make sure that you are using html5 video and not the flash version.
  • javascript is obviously enabled
  • The webcam is set to web view.
  • overwrite onShowCustomView in webchromeclient (unfortunately, it is never called)
  • hardware acceleration is enabled for activity

Some posts suggest calling the video playback () method manually, which imo is not a good idea, but this is not possible, since the video tag of the bright player is within the iframe, and there is no way to get it through javascript.

By now, I'm running out of ideas on what and where the problem may be. Any suggestions are most appreciated. The only related log message in LogCat:

I was working on an html5 video playing in android and this worked for me:
