Should I support smtp connection between mailboxes?

In my application, I need to send a confirmation email to some customers every time a transaction is completed.

How do I design or what is the best way to use smtp connection logic?

Do I have to connect to email account authentication and disconnect this connection while the application is running (sometimes several hours, sometimes 20-30 minutes without mail

Or do I need to close the connection every time I send mail? Despite the fact that mail can be sent several times per second for some operations ...

I send letters simply by telnetting to the mail application of the remote web server. This application can be used simultaneously by multiple users using the same email account.

So I need advice from people with experience regarding smtp behavior and habits. How does a regular mail application work at this stage?
