Npm install -g mongodb not installing mongodb globally on OSX 10.8.4?

I know that similar questions were asked to death, but I can’t find my specific situation. I'm just trying to install mongodb globally so that I can run it from any directory by typing mongodinstead of being in a specific bin and typing ./mongodthat works. I get this error when trying:

So I did sudo npm install mongodb -g:

But still, this is not global. I also tried export PATH=/path/to/mongodb/bin:$PATH, but this only works if I enter it into the terminal every session. I used to have this, so I could just type in mongoor mongodfrom any directory, but I am having problems on my new computer. Thanks.
