Why is the PHP mail function not recommended for sending bulk email?

Can someone explain to me why the PHP mail function is not suitable for sending bulk emails? I would like to understand this as deeply as possible - it would be very nice if someone trained in the secret art of sending email via PHP could explain how it all works. Other online sources are also welcome!

It is worth noting that the mail () function is not suitable for large volumes of email in a loop. This function opens and closes the SMTP socket for each message, which is not very efficient.
