Why is xms required?

I understand that -Xmsthey -Xmxare used to indicate the minimum and maximum heap sizefor a java program. And, according to my understanding, the JVM can work if we do not specify any of the parameters, i.e. Heap size can be controlled by the JVM itself.

So, if we want to limit the maximum heap size, we should use it -Xmx, and that's fine, now my question is why does someone need to limit the minimum heap size, since the JVM is very well managed.

Why -Xmsis it required at all?
