LDAP Server Updates and Event Notifications

Can I receive object content change events from an LDAP server? Basically, I'm looking for a solution to integrate lightweight directory services with our software through JNDI to set up active directory synchronization. (i.e. I would like the consumer application to be notified when entering a new record or changing the state of an object)

Below are a few features that I have come up with so far:

  • Enable an audit policy for directory objects and register a listener to read incoming changes from the change log.
  • Perform a permanent directory search.
  • Directory polling mechanism for changes.

Can someone with more in-depth knowledge of LDAP service recommend an optimal approach to a newbie like me?

I am not the final expert on this topic, but I had very similar requirements in my previous project, and I conducted a thorough study of possible ways to implement synchronization from the Actice Directory. As far as I know, there is no other solution than the three options listed above.
