Extract raw data from Google maps

What data can be extracted from Google maps? It seemed to me that I could just ask for information about places and geography through their api. I am looking to pull a city map from Google maps, and then make my own map to drop this data into the game engine. The brute force method will extract raster images and then process this information, but is there some kind of standard for geographic information that I need to research? And if so, can I get this information from Google maps?

If you need your own copy of the map, you might be better off not looking at the “Open street map” , Google TOS will most likely not allow the use you are looking for, while OSM is open source and you can download the entire dataset via desire, it should be your desire.

For mapping applications, I would consider QGIS , it is again a free and powerful tool.
