"apple-touch-icon-precomposed" is not a real rel attribute value?

Why do people ( h5bp , Mathias Bynens ) use an item <link rel="apple-touch-icon-precomposed">? Apple's documentation on this subject does not mention apple-touch-icon-precomposedas a value for the attribute rel.


Apple docs talk about this with predefined icons:

Safari on iOS 7 does not add effects to the icons. Older versions of Safari will not add effects to icon files named -precomposed.png suffix.


It looks like we could reference the pre-selected Apple touch icon, so ??:
