Separating line numbers from text in a terminal: Emacs

When I run emacs in terminal mode and turn on the linum global level option, the line numbers are very close to my text and it really irritates the eyes. Is there a way to separate line numbers from text in Emacs?

Try setting linum-formatto "%d "(space for notes).

Here you need to do more if you want to line-by-line the lines (which is provided 'dynamicby default for linum-format) with an interval after them. Perhaps something non-trivial should be done at linum-before-numbering-hook.
