Fatal error while trying to install gtk on Mac (Mavericks)

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. I am trying (again) to install gk on my Mac so that I can experiment with it from Haskell. I follow the instructions http://www.gtk.org/download/macos.php and was in the middle of the jhbuild meta-gtk-osx-bootstrap phase assembly

Build failure with Python errors (see log below) and popup dialog (Python unexpectedly exits using libpython2.7.dylib module)

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
