Can a custom keyboard extension communicate with a satellite application at runtime?

Can a user keyboard interact with a satellite application at runtime? Can a user keyboard dynamically display content based on the states set in the companion app?

If so, what APIs / documentation are available for this relationship between the extension and the application?
