What is a color card and when do I need it?

Is there a general concept or definition of what a “color map” is in computer graphics? You sometimes come across this term in some libraries - so can I assume that color maps intend to have a certain functionality and purpose?

Why do I need a color card and when do I need it?

Also, are there any resources on this issue - what am I looking for?

For complainers about how vague this question is: What is the difference between color maps in xlib and giflib?
