Is the interactive pop gesture from the view with the navigation bar hidden?

I have two view controllers, one of which pushes the other through the standard one UINavigationController. The second view controller hides its navigation bar through navigationBarHidden. Hiding this bar seems to interfere with the interactive gesture recognizer. I have a custom return button on the second screen, so for all purposes and tasks it is very similar to the navigation bar, only transparent, etc.

Is there a way that I can turn interactive pop music on again while keeping the navigation bar hidden on the second view controller, but showing it on the first? I'm admittedly not quite sure what the transition will be, but just wondering if this has a simple solution.

This seems to work.

Tested on iOS 7.1 simulator.
