Create complex XML drawings for Android

How powerful are Android XML-based drawings?

I'm really wondering if semi-complex bit objects like the following arrow icons can be replaced using only xml shapes.

So far, I have not seen many good examples of anything other than the basic ones. I know what <layer-list>can be used to combine figures, but it was difficult for me to work with them. In particular, the relative sizes and offsets of the shapes with <layer-list>do not seem to work well.
