Why do we have two versions of Java?

Why do we have two versions of Java?

  • Jdk from Oracle and one from OpenJDK.
  • And why is it so OpenJDK is only available for Linux?
  • And on Wikipedia, I find Java to be open source. But I find copyright information inside the Oracle JDK say everything is limited ???

  • Open JDK tries to invent the wheel, giving you freedom of choice (you can use the cool OpenJDK JVM or core Oracle)

  • If something is cool OBVIOUSLY it is only for linux

  • this question goes beyond the scope of SO, moreover, I'm not sure myself ...
