I am currently using Visual Studio Premium 2013 Update 3 with Team Foundation Server Online and using Git Repo. I have been using Git Repo successfully for several months until recently. Now, when I save the file, Visual Studio acts as if the file was registered. Files are no longer displayed in Included Changes, Excluded Changes, or No Traces after they are saved. I added about 6 new projects for the solution today, and each of them started with the correct (add) icon, but after working in Studio and saving the files for a day, they all now have a lock icon and show as "Checked In".
I can delete the project or file and add it back, which causes the extract symbol, but as soon as I save all the changes, they will return to registration.
Syncing with online repos does not apply to changes, so they are not recognized as registered changes.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution?
UPDATE: this most likely refers to renaming the solution file. I renamed the solution file and after that there was a problem. After completing the steps listed in the answer below and committing / synchronizing with the online repository, opening the backup again works fine.
