Safari web inspector "No verified applications" when the ipad is connected to mac book pro

I searched / read steps to set up web inspector from ipad on mac. All this seems straightforward and always shows that the ipad is connected in a drop-down menu (on safari on Mac). But it never allows me to select anything from my ipad ( "No verified applications" ), no matter which site I stopped in safari on my ipad.

I have a second iPad 32 Gig IOS gene version 8.0.2 (I started with 7.0.1, then upgraded to 7.0.2, then 8)

I am using Mac Book Pro IOS 10.9.5

Safari Version 7.0.6

Initially, it did not sync with my itunes when connected to a Mac, but I still saw a connected ipad (I just could not select anything from the “No verified applications” drop-down list ). I upgraded to the new version on ipad and now I see that my name is attached to the ipad in safari on my Mac. But it still does not allow me to actually select any applications, no matter which site I downloaded to safari on my ipad.

I tried restarting / updating both my mac and ipad, I started and stopped safari on Mac after connecting to ipad ... Anyway, nothing. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong, or if this is just a mistake?
