What is the alternative to using the Facebook chat API now that Facebook will soon disable the XMPP API?

Now that Facebook has completely disabled the XMPP service, how can I get around this? Will there be a possible way to send / receive messages in real time? Do I need to run my own XMPP server?

I guess there is still a way to do this, or desktop apps like Trillian should stop offering Facebook connections.

There is currently no other API that allows you to retrieve information about user chats.
