Mobile Safari: the difference between clicking the back button and scrolling back through history

In iOS 8 Mobile Safari, scrolling from the screen to the left or left of the screen, you can return to the browser history as if you had pressed the return button to Safari.

Both events fire the popstate window event. But I would like to have another interaction on the page based on what event the pop triggers.

I found this post about iOS 7: In iOS 7 Safari, how do you distinguish popstate events by scrolling along the edge against the back / fwd buttons?

I'm going to assume that nothing has changed, but I want to see if anyone has any other solutions or ideas.
