What is the difference between the classic local to mapreduce.framework.name in mapred-site.xml?

The official description of this parameter is as follows:

The runtime framework for executing MapReduce jobs. Can be one of local, classic or yarn.

I know the yarn value for MRv2, which will send the mapreduce job to the resourcemanager. But what is the difference between local and classic? Which one corresponds to MRv1?
