If you can set the icon number from today's widget

If you can set the icon number from today's widget?

I understand that it is impossible to install directly in the widget, but is it possible to establish a connection with the application and install it there without opening the application in the foreground? I tried NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName, but I can not get it to work through the widget and application.

I understand that background fetching may work, but it is rather inefficient to have standard background fetching only on the icon number on the icon.

Any good idea?
