How to ensure that irb accept emoji input instead of escaping it?

I have two poppies, from which I can have fun typing all emoji, please, in irb, pryetc. and deal with them just like any other line.

From a new Mac, which may have a few less customizable encoding configurations, I can't do this, and I'm not sure why.

$ ruby -v
ruby 2.1.1p76 (2014-02-24 revision 45161) [x86_64-darwin14.0]

Here's the animated GIF problem:

irb escaping emoji as unicode bytes

But the animated GIF irb works fine:

Any ideas on how to resolve this? I am not an expert in Ruby coding settings (UTF, etc.).
