The application is not installed for no reason.

I have an Android app that has 2 different package names, one for the production environment and the other for development. Package names

  • com.example.app
  • dev.com.example.app

The production version is always compiled with the same signature that we publish in the play store.

The development version is compiled using the developer signature, which it automatically receives from Eclipse. Since we have 2 Android developers, each version can get one of two developer signatures (I know that we can set one signature for both of them, but for now this is not important).

When I try to install the APK (via Dropbox) and I fail, I assume that the problem is that I have a version with signatures of another developer installed, so I uninstall the application and try again. This tactic worked very well for me until recently.

In the past few weeks, I can’t install the APK from Dropbox even after uninstalling the previous version, it just says: "The application is not installed."

The only way to install any version (even those that work once) is to run it directly from Eclipse. All other people in the company can really install the application through Dropbox.

Few things to clarify:

  • Unknown sources activated
  • Developer Options is also included
  • This also happens with the APK, which worked on my device in the past.
