MongoDB - monthly group

Question

I am writing a request in mongo db. I have a reservation table, and I want to get the number of orders per month, that is, group by month. I am confused about how to get a month from the date.

And I tried this:

db.booking.aggregate([{$group:{_id:new Date("$bookingdatetime").getMonth(), numberofbookings:{$sum:1}}}])

and it returns:

Where am I mistaken? Please help me.

You cannot include arbitrary JavaScript in the aggregation pipeline, therefore, since you save bookingdatetimeas stringinstead Date, you cannot use the operator $month.

However, since date strings conform to strict formats, you can use the operator $substrto extract the month value from a string:
