Using $$ rAF in an angular app

I create a directive that animates a sequence of images (allowing you to play, pause and pace). To get better performance, I would like to use requestAnimationFrame. I noticed that the angular source has a requestAnimationFrame service with a double dollar prefix ($$ rAF), which, I believe, indicates that it is not for public consumption. Why are these and what disadvantages are used to use this service, and not to create it?
