What is PDF stroking, non-main and fill?

I just started using Apache PDFBox, and I'm completely puzzled by what is meant by stroking, without stroking and filling when applied to text and lines.

Please can someone point me to a link / guide that explains what these terms mean (for beginners) and what is the difference between them.

It is pretty simple. Consider a rectangle of size 0.0 and 50 units in width and height. This is described as a path with peaks at 0,0 0.50 50.50 and 50.0
