Hide status bar in portrait mode in iOS8

Question

I followed the instructions here On iOS8, displaying my application in landscape mode will hide the status bar, but on iOS 7 the status bar is displayed in both orientations

i.e. set the status bar hidden in plist and add:

[[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarHidden:YES withAnimation:UIStatusBarAnimationNone];

but I still cannot hide the status bar. Any additional suggestions?

Select the view controller for which you have hidden the status bar, and set the status parameter to NONE, as shown in the figure below:
