Is it possible to display browser notifications from a rails application

I am wondering if it is possible to somehow send browser notifications from a Rails application using some gem, I do a lot with this search and cannot find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Rails is server-side. To be able to do this, you need something in javascript that you send back to the client to do the job for you.

the way i did this is something on the client, in javascript, which returns to the server - asynchronously - and checks to see if there are any notifications to display.
