Does anyone know a good rule of thumb for what's in .CSDEF compared to .CSCFG?

I was surprised by several questions in Exam 532 and 533, which more or less wanted me to remember exactly what settings were in the configuration files for Cloud Services. I think that at a basic level it is a rather complicated thing to distinguish without documentation in front of me.

For example: Scaling the number of instances for this role is defined in the .csdef file, but the instance size for the role is in .cscfg. It’s not clear to me why one against the other is suitable.

Does anyone have any helpful tips for remembering / invoking what is happening?
