How to add image to readme file in Stash

I am using Stash (which has Git) for my project

I am trying to add some images to the Readme.md file as

[picture](http://stash.xxxxxx.com/projects/zzzzz/img/abc.png)

but does not work. when i look through readme, all i see is plain text

please, help

Please note that stash may relate to markup in different ways, and therefore the usual github markdown solutions may not be applicable. if anyone knows an alternative way to do this, please let me know.
