What is DesignInstance in XAML

I actually study the MVVM pattern and found this in a lesson:

d:DataContext="{d:DesignInstance step1:ViewModel}">

I know that I use a data context to bind data, but I don’t understand what DesignInstance is useful for and why I write it there?

On MSDN HP is: "DesignInstance is a design-time property." But there is nothing I can do about it.

Change: step 1 from the tutorial at http://www.learnmvvm.com/tutorial.html#step1-1
