What is the relationship between the ring and the pedestal - do I need to know the Ring to use the pedestal?

I was made to believe that Pedestal is a replacement for Ring, however from all the examples that I see that Pedestal actually uses Ring. This is the most confusing! Do I need to know and understand how Ring works in order to use Pedestal effectively. Essentially, is Pedestal standing on the shoulders of the Ring, or does it intend to completely replace it?
