Why is ActiveMQ about 20% faster with memoryPersistenceAdapter?

I use Active MQ with 99% fickle themes. For some tests, when I used exclusively fake messages, I tried if it makes the broker use the memoryPersistenceAdapter. I changed the configuration to:

<beans>
    ...
    <broker ... persistent="false"*>
    ...
</beans>

It really matters! 20% more bandwidth.

In theory, since nothing should be preserved, there should be no difference whatsoever. What's going on here?
