What is the difference between assembler directives .ascine and .string?

I know that the directive .asciidoes not put a null character at the end of a line. A directive is used for this purpose .asciz. However, I do not know if the directive indicates a .stringnull character at the end of the line. If so, what is the difference between the directives .ascizand .string? It seems to me that both .ascii, and .stringseem to be superfluous.
