Change the status bar color in Android

Question

I am creating an Android application, and now I want to change the status bar (the one that is on top of the screen displaying the signals of the wireless network and zone, battery status, etc.), but it does not work.

When previewing the XML file, it shows a different color (the shade of orange that I want to use) for the panel, but when I run the application both in the emulator and on my mobile phone, the color remains white.

I hide the action bar and put a gray image at the top of the application.
