Access-Control-Allow-Origin on OpenShift with Node.js, express and socket.io

As the name implies, I am having problems with remote access to my node.js instance hosted on OpenShift. The error I get in the browser console is as follows:

XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://app-domain.rhcloud.com:8000/socket.io/?EIO=3&transport=polling&t=1430117973290-2 . The requested resource does not have an Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. Origin ' http: // localhost: 8383 ' is therefore not allowed. The response had an HTTP status code of 503. (08: 59: 33: 579 | error, javascript) in public_html / index.html

I understand that headers must be configured to allow cross-domain requests, and I tried several different options for doing this in my server code.

It turns out that the NodeJS cartridge of my OpenShift application was corrupted. I had to completely recreate the application. After creating, I cloned the default project from the git repository that OpenShift provides after creating your application. I updated the server.js file to contain the code from Server in my question above.
