Spring Framework and Java EE

I have experience in web applications (using JSP / Servets); The core of Java. I also have some experience developing Spring MVC.

I read Spring's story and the driving forces that seduced the creation of this structure.

I am confused about the relationship between Java EE and Spring Framework. For instance:

1) We can create a web application using Spring MVC or simple JSP / servlets.

Now that I dig into Spring MVC more, I learned that Spring MVC provides an abstract layer on top of Servlets, that is, ease of development for writing a web application.

2) Spring JPA: Again, Spring JPA is the abstract layer that uses the JPA provider below.

Now it turns out that the Spring Framework provides an abstract layer and internally uses Java EE technology.

If my understanding is higher, then how is Spring better than Java EE? Many times I read (online) that the Spring Framework is an alternative to Java EE. If the Spring Framework internally uses the technologies provided by Java EE, then how is the Spring Framework an alternative to Java EE?

Any simple explanation to clarify this doubt was greatly appreciated.
