Is there a reason legitimate websites use this type of obfuscation

Drank some of the top 200 websites (from Alexa) using obfuscation in javascript code. I wonder why.

Update1  The title has been changed, so it makes a little more sense. I have a hunch that this was done to prevent data crashes, but I'm not sure if this is agreed by the community.
