What is `/ _ah / background` with Google Flex VM?

Question

At the beginning of Google Flex Vms , and in the logs there are several requests for /_ah/background, which lasted ~ 1 hour each time. The only link to them that I could find is this question, which mentions that they are related to background threads , but I don't think the thing is like:

• nowhere do we use background themes
• this API is deprecated, and I'm not even sure that we can use it.
• we use processes, but they are short-lived (not an hour anywhere) and do not print any log messages

Any ideas?
