Asmx wsdl download forever

I have a web service application that unexpectedly stopped working. I have enabled directory browsing in IIS and can view the application directory. I can view the xml files in the application directory, but I cannot view the .config files and I cannot view the wsdls of any of the web services. When I try to go to http://server/app/service.asmx?wsdl , the browser will be in the download state forever.

Any ideas that could go wrong here?

Did you look at the server event log? Many ASP.NET errors will be there, it looks like it might qualify

Regarding the first download question, can you go to the server site?

IIS protects the default Web.config files and usually returns the error message "This page type is not served." This is a good thing that will save your connection strings and that will not be accidentally viewed. There is more information on resolving exceptions for this here .
