Tips for setting up Eclipse + PDT?

I recently wanted to get an IDE for decend for my third-party PHP projects and by finding SO found by Eclipse + PDT. Although this is not quite at the Visual Studio level, for this purpose it is pretty good and better than Notepad ++. I can even debug a few, although this is pretty buggy.

But there is one thing that annoys me. It seems to have some kind of weird performance issue, so it uses a lot of processor about once a minute. This is not noticeable in itself, but if you do something else at the same time (for example, watch a movie or play Quake 3), it sometimes causes annoying hiccups.

Of course, my computer is not modern (Sempron 2200+ with 1 GB of RAM), but then it, of course, is more than enough for all this.

Another performance question: I'm used to Visual Studio, where IntelliSense appears as soon as you enter a compatible character. Here you need to wait a bit. Is there any way to open it instantly?

PS Perhaps there is an even better freeware IDE for PHP?

Added: Stefan Schmidt suggested changing the speed of auto-activation. There seems to be a mistake. The less I installed it, the more it does not open at all. For example, when he is 200, he opens basically all the time when there is something to open. At 10, it does not open (at least) to static members of the class. What gives?

There is another project to add PHP support for Eclipse: PHPeclipse . I know that when PDT was still young, people often choose PHPeclipse because of performance issues with PDT, but I can’t say how the current versions of both compare with performance (and features) since I stopped my development activities PHPeclipse back.

If your performance problem is a real cork, you can try PHPeclipse.
