Best Gnome Alternative for UltraEdit?

When I switch from Windows to Ubuntu / Gnome, I am looking for an alternative to UltraEdit.

I tried several tools, but often they lack really useful functions, such as:

• Syntax coloring
• FTP file editing (FTP access files without using an external application)
• Manage character sets.

Which one are you using? And what are their main features?
