If short URLs are such a good practice, why not use large sites like Amazon or Facebook?

Short, close URLs (for example, on this site) say a lot about good web development practice with the goal of good SEO (and possibly other reasons).

If so, then how many sites like Amazon and Facebook still have ridiculously long URLs on their pages (for example, about a section, etc.)?

Is there an engineering problem with implementing this functionality on a very large, real site? (I would suggest that it is best to plan and consider such things in the first place).

As for Amazon, most of the URL is not important. It transfers information about the user and the associated assistant. Things that probably won't have search engine spiders.

In addition, Amazon and Facebook really do not want every book on their site to be indexed. If you type the name of the book on Google, Amazon wants the top link to be the main page for the book’s description — not some Listmania user page talking about it.
