Effective display of two large lists

I was assigned to write XSLT 2.0 to translate an XML document into another XML document. I'm relatively new to XSLT, but I learned a lot in the days when I do this. During this time, I had to compare simple values, i.e. 002 β†’ TH, etc. This was fine for small lists with less than 10 values, I used xsl: select. However, I need to display more than 300 values from one list to another and vice versa. Each list has a meaning and a text description. The two list values are not always directly mapped, so I may need to compare text descriptions and use the default values if necessary.

I have two solutions to the problem:

  • Use xsl: select: I think it can be slow and maybe hard to update if any of the lists change.

  • Have an XML document with a relationship between each list item. I would use XPath expressions to get the associated value. This is my preferred solution because I think it will be more convenient and updated. Although I'm not sure if this is effective.

Which solution should I use, one of my suggestions, or is there a better way to match these values?

Here is the XSLT 2.0 solution .

XML file source:

<input>
  <data>001</data>
  <data>002</data>
  <data>005</data>
</input>

"Display" xml file:

<map>
  <default>?-?-?</default>
    <input value="001">RZ</input>
    <input value="002">TH</input>
    <input value="003">SC</input>
</map>

XSLT conversion:

<xsl:stylesheet version="2.0"
 xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
  <xsl:output omit-xml-declaration="yes" indent="yes"/>

  <xsl:param name="pmapFile"
       select="'C:/temp/deleteMap.xml'" />

  <xsl:variable name="vMap"
       select="document($pmapFile)" />

  <xsl:variable name="vDefault"
       select="$vMap/*/default/text()" />

  <xsl:key name="kInputByVal" match="input"
   use="@value" />

  <xsl:template match="/*">
    <output>
      <xsl:apply-templates/>
    </output>
  </xsl:template>

  <xsl:template match="data">
    <data>
        <xsl:sequence select=
         "(key('kInputByVal', ., $vMap)[1]/text(),
           $vDefault
           )[1]
         "/>
    </data>
  </xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

Output:

<output>
  <data>RZ</data>
  <data>TH</data>
  <data>?-?-?</data>
</output>
