Can an ASP web service return a ZIP file?

I wish it were possible!

Can you write a web service (using C # and asmx) that returns a ZIP file?

If so, can you give a simple example?

Regardless of whether it is ZIP, DOC, PDF. We call it MTOM in the SOAP world.

I'm not sure if you can use MTOM with asmx services with vanilla.NET services ( see here ). I know that this is possible if using WCF.
