What is the role of HibernateUtil?

I'm new to Hibernate, and every time I come across a Hibernate tutorial, is there a mention of the HibernateUtil class?

What does this actually do? And if there is a standard implementation, why not include it in Hibernate itself?

It seems that they want the developers to write on the design themselves, because the number of possibilities for coverage is too large.
