What language are the Android apps embedded in?

I was just starting to learn Android, and planned to make several applications.

So, I was wondering in what language I am building applications and what free tools and books about it, as well as some good environment for it?

As Edelkom said, Android apps are built in Java.

Eclipse is one of the IDEs you can use, although I personally prefer using IntelliJ . IntelliJ10 comes with Android SDK - for Community Edition, free :)
