Application Verifier joins your application and performs various actions to try to cause the application to crash, such as simulating low-resource situations. It also makes the various APIs much more rigorous and will do things like write who skipped pens, etc.
You should definitely use it with any desktop application or service, although to get a lot of information from it you need to attach WinDbg to your process, and Application Verifier will display more information in the debug window.
